In Llanberis, stop at Caffi Sam, a nice café with good vegetarian options.
In Caernarfon, the best place to eat is Y Gegin Fach, a Welsh café hidden away on the back street of Castle Square.
In Aberystwyth, try the Olive Branch, a Greek restaurant.
In Pembrokeshire, there are several nice cafes in Newport, including The Canteen and Blas at Fronlas.
Warning: as elsewhere in the UK, standards for pub food are often low. Avoid.
There is an extensive and reasonably priced bus network across the main cities in Wales. The bus is usually around double the time it takes to drive somewhere and involves finding out precisely which bus to take.
As the distances are big within Wales, taxis are hardly ever a serious option. If you plan to cover a lot of ground in Wales, it can be worthwhile to rent a car. There are many options, and navigating them can be complicated. Once you’ve identified the best option to rent a car, be sure to check the prices if you book directly with the car rental provider. Although this is hardly ever cheaper, it would give you the option to book insurance with the rental provider, which is usually a more straightforward process.
Snowdonia National Park: a very large national park with Mount Snowdon (1,085 m, the highest mountain in Wales and the highest mountain in Britain outside of Scotland). The easiest ascent to Mount Snowdon is from Llanberis, even though this will still take a full day, with good hiking shoes and appropriate supplies.
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park: this large coastal section is stunning for its rock coast and geology. The area itself is mostly filled with hilly fields that are in agricultural use, which only adds to the beautiful scenery.
Caernarfon: the main sight here is the 13th-century medieval castle, used by the English to consolidate their rule over Wales. It is also the place where the Prince of Wales (heir to the British throne) is invested. The castle is surrounded by a lovely old seaside town.
Aberystwyth: a student town on the coast with a row of mansions on the coast and a cute derelict castle.
Cardiff: the biggest city in Wales with a grand castle of its own.
Brecon Beacons: a mountainous park just an hour north of Cardiff with excellent walking opportunities.
